Leather or Suede? How to Choose Your Peshawari Chappal

Most people buying a Peshawari chappal online get stuck on the same question: leather or suede? They look similar in photos, they cost about the same, and both are handmade the same way. But they feel different on the foot, they age differently, and they suit different occasions. Here is how we think about it.
Leather: the one that lasts forever
Leather is the traditional choice. It is what most of our fathers wore, and a good pair will easily last you years. Our leather chappals are made from genuine cow leather, either glossy high chrome leather or a smoother, more matte finish.
Leather starts out a little stiff. Give it a week or two of regular wear and it softens and shapes itself around your foot. After that it just keeps getting more comfortable. It also handles rain and dust better than suede, which matters if you wear your chappals every day or travel a lot.
Leather is the right pick if you want one pair for everything: office, Friday prayers, a wedding, a long day out. Black leather in particular goes with almost any shalwar kameez.

Suede: softer, lighter, more relaxed
Suede is leather with the inside surface brushed up, which gives it that soft, velvety finish. It is comfortable from the first day, with very little breaking in. It also has a warmer, more relaxed look than glossy leather, which is why many people love it.
The trade-off is care. Suede does not like heavy rain or mud. A quick brush now and then keeps it looking new, and if it does get wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature, never in front of a heater. Treat it a bit gently and it will look great for a long time.
Suede is the right pick if you want something that looks a little more modern, or a pair specifically for Eid, weddings and evenings out. Our suede comes in beige, grey, chocolate brown, black and navy.

Then pick your sole
The upper is only half the story. The sole decides how the chappal feels after six hours on your feet.
Rubber sole. The classic. Firm, grippy and long lasting. Good for everyday wear.
EVA foam sole. The same kind of light, springy material used in comfort trainers. These are our lightest pairs, around 300 to 350 grams per chappal. If you are on your feet all day, start here: lightweight Peshawari chappals.
Chunky sole. A thicker, bolder sole that gives the chappal real presence. It adds a little height and looks great at a wedding. See the chunky sole range.
Every Baaz pair, whatever the sole, comes with a dotted memory foam insole that slowly moulds to the shape of your foot.
Our honest recommendation
If this is your first good pair, get black or brown leather on a rubber or foam sole. It will go with everything and last the longest.
If you already own a leather pair, or you are buying for a wedding or Eid, go for suede. It is the more interesting look, and it feels lovely to wear.
And if you have bigger feet, everything above also comes in sizes 47 to 50, made to order.
