Brown Peshawari Chappals: How to Choose the Right Pair

Burnt Cedar deep brown cow leather Smart Zalmi Peshawari chappal by Baaz Leathers

Brown is the colour many men reach for most. It goes with white, cream, grey, olive and navy shalwar kameez, it looks right with jeans, and it hides a dusty street far better than black. But "brown" covers a lot of ground. A deep chocolate suede and a glossy tamarind leather are both brown, and they suit very different days. This guide walks you through the brown pairs we make, what sets each one apart, and how to pick the one that fits the way you live.

Start with the shade

Decide how dark you want to go first. The shade does most of the work.

  • Light and warm browns read relaxed and daytime. They sit well with white and light coloured kameez and with summer clothes.
  • Mid browns like chestnut and tamarind are the all rounders. They are smart enough for a dawat and easy enough for every day.
  • Deep browns like burnt brown and chocolate feel richer and a little more formal. They pair well with darker clothes, waistcoats and evening wear.

Our brown pairs, one by one

Old Money Brown

Old Money Brown is our glossy one. It is made from high chrome leather in a rich imli brown, so it has a polished shine straight out of the box. It sits on a durable rubber sole with a dotted memory foam insole. If you want a brown chappal that looks dressed up for weddings, Eid and dinners, start here.

Heritage Chestnut

Heritage Chestnut is a warm chestnut brown in premium cow leather, with a lightweight rubber sole and the same dotted memory foam insole. It is a touch quieter than Old Money Brown, which makes it one of the easiest pairs to wear with almost anything in your wardrobe.

Old Grain

Old Grain is made from premium cowhide leather in a rich brown finish and sits on a lightweight EVA sole. If you are on your feet a lot and want something lighter underfoot, this is the brown leather pair to look at. You will find it alongside our other light pairs in the lightweight Peshawari chappals.

Burnt Cedar

Burnt Cedar is for people who prefer depth over shine. It is made from 100% cow leather in a deep burnt brown with a matte, earthy look, and the leather ages naturally, picking up character the more you wear it. It is part of The Cedar Pair, alongside its black twin.

Raw Cedar

Raw Cedar is our simplest brown chappal: genuine cow leather, a clean polished finish and a slim profile, made in the same tradition as the rest of the range. It is also the most affordable brown pair we make, which is why it sits in Baaz Essentials.

Coco Dune

Coco Dune is the suede option, in a chocolate brown cowhide suede on a lightweight EVA foam sole. Suede has a soft, velvety look and feels a little more relaxed. If you like the idea of suede, the rest of our range is in the suede Peshawari chappals collection.

Glossy, matte or suede?

This comes down to how you want the pair to look in a year.

  • Glossy leather (Old Money Brown) keeps its polished look with a wipe and a little care. It looks formal and stays that way.
  • Matte cow leather (Burnt Cedar) changes with you. It darkens and softens where it is worn and picks up a patina over time.
  • Suede (Coco Dune) is soft and rich in colour but needs a bit more care in rain and dust.

If you are not sure what any of these leathers actually are, we explain it plainly in Cow Leather or High Chrome? What Your Peshawari Chappal Is Made Of.

Think about the sole too

Our brown pairs come on a few different soles. Rubber soles, like on Old Money Brown and Heritage Chestnut, are sturdy and grippy and feel solid underfoot. EVA foam soles, like on Old Grain and Coco Dune, are noticeably lighter, which helps on long days. Neither is better, it depends whether you want a firm feel or a lighter step.

Brown or black?

If you only own one pair, brown is the more forgiving choice for daytime and light clothes, while black is sharper at night and with dark clothes. If you are leaning towards black, our black Peshawari chappal guide covers those pairs the same way.

Bigger feet

Heritage Chestnut, Old Grain, Burnt Cedar and Raw Cedar are also made in sizes 47 to 50, made to order. You will find them in Big and Tall.

Keeping brown leather looking good

Brown leather is easy to live with. Wipe off dust with a soft dry cloth, let a damp pair dry naturally away from direct heat, and give it a little leather cream now and then so it does not dry out. A good brown pair should look better after a year than on the day it arrived. We go into more detail in Why Most Leather Chappal Don't Actually Wear Out.
