The Old Money Chappal: Black or Brown, and How to Wear It

Old Money Black, black Takidaar peshawari kheri chappal in high chrome leather, handcrafted in Pakistan by Baaz Leathers

If you have searched for an "old money chappal", this is the plain answer. At Baaz, Old Money is the name of one of our own pairs: a classic Peshawari chappal in high chrome leather, made by hand in KP, in black and in brown. This guide explains what the pair is, how the two colours differ and how to wear them, so you can decide in a few minutes.

What the Old Money chappal is

Old Money is our take on the classic, clean cut Peshawari chappal. No chunky sole, nothing trying too hard. Just a neat shape, careful stitching and leather that looks smart from the first day you wear it.

Here is what goes into every pair:

  • Leather: high chrome cowhide. On Old Money Black it has a soft sheen: not matte, not high gloss.
  • Sole: a medium tyre and cork sole, firm enough for daily wear, without the height of a chunky sole.
  • Insole: a dotted memory foam insole, for comfort through a long day.
  • Made by hand: every pair is handmade by Peshawari craftsmen.
  • Price: Rs 8,450, with free delivery anywhere in Pakistan and cash on delivery.

Regular sizes run from 40 to 46. Like all good leather, it softens and shapes itself to your foot as you wear it, while keeping its structure.

Old Money Black

Old Money Black is the darker of the two and the one that goes with the most. The black is deep and even, and the soft sheen makes it look dressed up without shouting. It is the safe, smart choice: right with a white kameez at Jummah, with a black or charcoal shalwar kameez and waistcoat at a wedding dinner, and with a plain grey kameez on an ordinary weekday.

If black is your colour, our black Peshawari chappal guide compares it with our other black pairs, and you can see them all together in black Peshawari chappals.

Old Money Brown

Old Money Brown is the same Old Money design, sole and insole in a warm imli brown, also in high chrome leather and also Rs 8,450. Brown feels a little more relaxed than black. It looks lovely with white, cream, beige, olive and sky blue, and it suits summer and daytime events especially well.

You can browse it next to our other brown pairs in brown Peshawari chappals.

Black or brown: a quick way to decide

  • Choose black if this will be your one good pair, if you wear a lot of dark or white shalwar kameez, or if you want something for formal events and weddings.
  • Choose brown if you already own a black pair, if your wardrobe leans towards earthy and light colours, or if you want a pair that feels warm and easy in the daytime.
  • Still unsure? Think about the kameez you wear most. Dark and white clothes lean black. Cream, beige and pastels lean brown.

How to wear it

With shalwar kameez. This is home ground for the Old Money chappal. A crisp, well pressed kameez and a clean pair of leather chappals is a look that never dates.

With a waistcoat. For Eid, a nikkah or a family dinner, add a waistcoat. Black chappals with a black, navy or grey waistcoat look sharp. Brown works beautifully with camel, mustard or olive.

With jeans or chinos. On a casual day, the Old Money chappal also works with dark jeans or chinos and a plain shirt. Brown is usually the easier match here.

Every day. The medium sole and memory foam insole make it comfortable enough for daily wear, not only for special days.

A close cousin: Heritage Chestnut

If you like the Old Money look but want a chestnut shade of brown, have a look at Heritage Chestnut. It is made from the same high chrome leather as Old Money Black, sits on a medium tyre and cork sole too, and costs the same Rs 8,450. It also comes in a made to order Big and Tall version for sizes 47 to 50, which you will find with our other large sizes in the Big and Tall collection.

Looking after your pair

  • Wipe off dust with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
  • If the leather gets wet, let it dry naturally, away from a heater or direct sun.
  • Store your chappals somewhere cool and dry, not sealed in a plastic bag.
